Helen Thayer was the first woman to travel solo to the magnetic North Pole. She only went with all the things she was going to need and a dog. The dog was called Charlie. He was part wolf. Helen brought Charlie with her in case a polar bear was going to attack.
She was born on the 12th of November 1937 in Whangarei, New Zealand.
Helen was looking for a sponsorship before she went. Everyone told her she couldn’t go because she was a girl and she needed a man to go with her. Her parents were the only people who told her that she can do anything that she wanted to do. People also told her, “polar bears are going to eat you, you will drown in the ocean or fall in the ice”. She didn't listen to any of them and she did it and survived. This is a picture of Helen and Charlie.

She is a very strong and persistent person, what an amazing achievement!
